The original AirPods Max launched in 2020 and got a USB-C update in 2024. In 2026, Apple released AirPods Max 2, the first real upgrade inside. So is it worth moving up? Here is what changed.
What is new in AirPods Max 2
- The H2 chip: replacing the older H1, the same chip family used in AirPods Pro.
- Stronger noise cancellation: about 1.5 times more effective, with an improved Transparency mode.
- New smart features: Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalised Volume, Loud Sound Reduction and Live Translation.
- Siri improvements: nod or shake your head to respond to Siri announcements.
- Better sound processing: a new high dynamic range amplifier and improved Spatial Audio.
-
Newer Bluetooth: Bluetooth 5.3, with lower wireless latency.
What stays the same
- The iconic design, with aluminium ear cups and a knit mesh canopy.
- USB-C charging.
- Lossless audio over a USB-C cable.
Who should upgrade?
Upgrade if you fly often, work in noisy places or rely on calls. The stronger noise cancellation and Voice Isolation are the biggest everyday improvements. If you own an AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3 and love Adaptive Audio, you will want it on your headphones too.
Stay with the original if you mostly listen at home in a quiet room and your AirPods Max still have good battery health. The sound and design remain excellent.

Our verdict
For most people buying in 2026, AirPods Max 2 is the better choice. The noise cancellation and smart features make a real difference every day, and they will be supported for longer. The original AirPods Max is still a lovely pair of headphones and a good value way into the design.
